Very nice replacement for V6 pad, easy install if you know how

Got these to replace my MDR-V6 headphone pads which, like others', were flaking off the pleather rather aggressively.Other reviews are spot on: these are plusher and enhance bass while taking the harsh edge off treble. The fabric is warmer, but more breathable, so it's a net comfort gain for me. The pads themselves are thicker than stock, and do a good job of keeping the headphones from crushing my ear. Noise isolation seems about the same to me.Regarding installation:1) Toss the stiff plastic inserts. You don't need them.2) Pull off the old pads. They just come right off with a good tug.3) Take these, and flip the edge on each pad inside out all the way around, like turning up the hem on a pair of jeans.4) Hold the V6s (between my knees worked best for me) so that one ear is pointing straight up and the rest is out of the way.5) Take the circular backing pad and center it on the V6 earpiece. There should be fabric-on-fabric contact that'll keep it from moving around too much.6) Place the earpad pad dead center on top of that. As you do the rest, try to keep a little downward pressure to hold things in place.7) Start flipping the edge down around the earpiece. Don't try to get it in the slot yet, flip it over the entire edge.I recommend starting at the narrow part of the oval, doing one whole half to the other narrow part, then holding that in place with one hand while flipping the other half down with the other. If it slides off, flip it back up and start over. You'll quickly get the hang of holding one part in place while flipping the rest.8) Once it's flipped down all the way around, pull one part of the pad to the side *very gently* so that the edge finds its way into the groove. Works best in the middle of the wide part of the oval, since it's easiest to pull out there without disturbing the rest of the pad.9) When you have part of the edge in the groove, you can just work the rest of the way around pressing with your fingernail and the rest will slide in. If any is being stubborn, pull it to the side slightly and it'll fall in the groove.10) Repeat for the other ear.11) When you've done both, check that the backing pads are relatively centered (i.e. no headphone innards showing). If not, you can slide fingers beneath the earpad to gently recenter them without pulling the whole pad back off.I switched back and forth between these and the stock pads twice to A/B sound quality noise isolation. First time installing took maybe 5 min/side. Subsequent times were 1-2 min/side. It's pretty simple -if- you start by flipping up the edge.Very recommended.

My Sony MDR-7506 headphones had seen hours of daily use for about six years, and the pads were really starting to show it. As amazing as those headphones are, the Sony pads are not very durable. Mine were still comfortable, but they were falling apart, leaving black flakes in my hair every time I wore them, and the interior edges had busted open, revealing the foam inside. I could no longer avoid buying replacements, but I wasn't eager to spend money on a product that I new had a limited lifespan. (After all, I'm guessing the cans themselves will last another six years at least!)After doing a little online research, it seemed like these Beyerdynamic pads were a good alternative, so I decided to go for it. Installation was...about as difficult as installing Sony pads, which is not high praise, but it's doable. It was easier once I started pulling the edges PAST the groove in the headphones and then slowly sliding them back down into place. Once this rather frustrating task was finished, I immediately gave my newly refurbished headphones a test drive with some of my favorite orchestral pieces. At first, the somewhat firmer foam of the pads pressed a little too hard on my head, and the texture of the velour wasn't my favorite, and I was a little put off by the way the high end of the sound seemed quieter......but after less than a week of use, I've changed my mind. These pads do seem to get broken in a little bit as you use them, which is a good thing. They're quite comfortable now, and the high end doesn't suffer much. Just takes a little bit of getting used to. I'd say these pads have three major advantages:* The surface clearly won't be flaking off in a few years.* The bass is a little bit louder and more resonant, but not annoyingly so.* At least with my ears and head shape, these pads muffle outside sounds a lot better than the Sonys.So suffice it to say I now feel very good about the purchase. Would it be worth it with brand-new headphones? Meh, I think the Sony pads are fine while they last. But once they start to disintegrate all over your noggin, I think these Beyerdynamic pads are the way to go.EDIT: Just a small update. As of August 3rd, 2012 - over a year later - I'm still using these same pads on these same cans on a daily basis, and they do not disappoint. They still sound and feel great, and they're still in perfect condition! Better than ever, in fact...the pads have softened up just slightly over time, but they're not falling apart at all. No soft black flakes!

Sony MDR7506 Professional Large Diaphragm HeadphoneUPDATE: 18 months since my "must-have" review. How's it going? I find no issues with anything stated in that review. I'm more grateful than ever for the decision to purchase 7506's (just a fantastic product still like brand new). How about the velour earpads? Well, I discovered the original equipment faus leathers are equally comfortable during colder months of year but velours are hands down great year around and 100% improvement during warm months. Having mastered the install process, I'm at ease changing out the pads to accomodate the temperatures a few times through the year, hopefuly adding lifetime to both sets of earpads. Both sets are like new after 18 months...no discomfort, no unusual wear/tear, no flaking.Additional recommendation: you can spend megabucks buying products for storing 7506's and others when not in use. My solution: purchase from dozens of stores (even dollar stores) a plastic coated metal rack sold as storage for irons (as in laundry). The rack can be attached to whatever with couple of screws (always included in package), picture hooks, etc. and it just happens to have all the correct features to hang your earphones and umpteen feet of cable out of harms way. Cost: couple of bucks and much more efficient than $20 to $100 racks sold specifically for ear phones.ORIGINAL REVIEW - While researching and completing homework on Sony 7506's a huge number of reviewers commented on faux leather ear pads (original equipment). Two problems were repeated by nearly all complainers: discomfort due to material heating up and deterioration over too short a time (even leaving flecks of the material on face and ears when the problem sets in). One reviewers solution and recommendation was purchase of the Beyerdynamic Velour replacement earpads. I purchased the velours at the same time as the 7506's, they arrived the same day and they've been on the headphones since that first day. There is no comparison between the original pads and the velours. If you're not familiar with replacing pads, seek help! The velours come with zero instructions. Bad news: you can make a big mess if you just tear into the change-out. Good news: replacement is a one minute, very simple procedure if you know what you're doing (where to pull and tug, where to tuck and tie-down, etc.) I didn't find a single reliable source to adequately explain the process, but I found some EXCELLENT on-line sources at both Sony and Beyerdynamics web sites that provide written instructions and some include illustrations. Over three months of daily usage now and couldn't be more pleased with adding the velours. Cost is very competitive, seller is excellent (except for not enclosing instructions), comfort is 100% improvement, durability is as yet untested but also appears to be huge improvement.
